What the research actually shows
A study comparing melatonin suppression in elementary-school-aged children versus adults found something worth knowing: children showed more than twice the melatonin suppression response to evening light exposure that adults did. What that sensitivity actually means day to day
Practically, it shows up in a few well-supported ways:
Harder time falling asleep. Evening screen use delays melatonin release more in kids than the same exposure would in an adult, which pushes back sleep onset.
Lower sleep quality. Disrupted melatonin release affects the depth and quality of sleep, not just how long it takes to fall asleep.

What actually helps

Set a real screen cutoff before bed. An hour or more of screen-free wind-down before sleep gives melatonin release time to get back on track.

Build a consistent bedtime routine. Kids' circadian rhythms respond well to consistency — same wind-down steps, same time, every night.
